Career paths begin sooner than most young adults think. Professionals only realise this by looking back over many years of experience.
With the world changing rapidly, in order to succeed, sixth form students have to become more proactive in order to understand themselves, their values, interests, and skills. There are thousands of different paths that can be pursued in terms of future occupation, so why is this sometimes treated as a one-size-fits all type of decision?
“At The British College of Gava we want our students to gain a competitive advantage for the future to face a job-market that is becoming more demanding by the minute. The International Baccalaureate Career-Related Programme (IBCP)* prepares students for the future of work, while they continue to deepen their academic knowledge, develop personal skills and core values”, says Simon Mower, the School’s Principal.
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Career-related Programme (CP) is a framework of international education that incorporates the values of the IB into a unique programme addressing the needs of students who wish to engage in career-orientated learning while gaining transferable and lifelong skills in applied knowledge, critical thinking, communication, and cross-cultural engagement. The programme leads to higher education, apprenticeships or employment.
“We already offer the IB Diploma Programme but we identified a global need for a programme that has a more vocational outlook”, said Simon. By offering a more flexible programme to students in terms of study time, they are able to focus on a specific career-orientated area. This is a great opportunity for those learners who have a clear direction and wish to gain practical skills and sound theoretical knowledge in a particular field.
The British College of Gava is not alone in this academic venture. They have joined forces with EU Business School with campuses in Barcelona, Munich and Geneva and, once the process of authorization is complete, they will become the first school in Catalunya, and only the second in Spain, to offer the IB Career related Programme
“The Business Pathway that we have created is a great opportunity for students to acquire the knowledge and skills they need to embark on a business-related career while completing the IBCP core and studying a selection of modules with the EU Business School” – explains Simon Mower – “Plus upon successful completion, students are automatically admitted into the first year of EU Business School bachelor’s programs in any of their campuses in Barcelona, Munich or Geneva.”
With the international framework offered at The British College of Gava and the perks of being a student at the EU Business school, these pupils will get a lot more from this programme than just the theoretical knowledge. Students will gain a competitive advantage before enrolling in a business bachelor’s degree, develop an international mindset that is key to success in today’s corporate world, improve their business English communication skills and get the opportunity to experience ‘real-life’ working environments.
Simon Mower is confident that “there has never been a better opportunity for students with a clear Business orientated pathway. This programme will help them to develop solid foundations in many areas of study which will prepare them effectively for the bachelors program. I recommend this pathway to boost student’s confidence before stepping into university for the first time or simply to gain more knowledge in different business areas.”
With this in mind, The British College of Gava is now looking into a variety of options for career related studies to launch in the near future, including the fields of sustainability, sports and the arts. The goal is to find the best possible paths of study for sixth form students.
As today’s fast-changing labour market continues to evolve, students face the very important challenge of acquiring the essential skills to succeed in the workplace. It’s important for families to work together with the school to better understanding students’ interests in order to provide them with quality learning opportunities and find the career path that suits them best.
*The British College of Gava is currently in the final stages of the authorization process to offer the IB Career-related Pathway. Expected start date is September 2022.
